I had a 96 and have done that job twice, make sure replace the thermostat otherwise it's a do-over several months later because you tried to save $20. Been there etc!! Change the belt, tensioner, water pump and thermostat.

Never heard of them before, but I just installed a Gates Racing (blue) timing belt on my 2.8L Passat.
Only mods: AEM cold air intake, Hawk HP+ brake pads, Bridgestone Potenza RE-11 tires.
If and when you put new tre in go oem S4. They are made by lemforder. Don't skimp and buy the crappy febi units.
I put Bosch wipers from Advanced Auto on my R32 and 1988 Audi Quattro for under $50, and they installed quick/easy.
Bosch F5DP0R on a T3/T4 50 trim at 25psi daily. Love it.
Cross drilled and Slotted Rotors | EBC "Redstuff" Kevlar
Anyways, I put in so Bosch Tri-Electrodes and Beru coilpacks. Once I got the APR ECU back the car fired right up. I drove it for a good hour and no misfires!!!
I would add the chain driven oil pump to the Con side. The internal chain is more susceptible to failure and has higher maintenance cost. these motors are notorious for the chain guilds wearing out clogging the oil pump pickup and starving the head, turbo and motor of oil pressure causing an expensive repair. ask anyone you know who owns one. My friend with a 1.8T Audi has had this happen twice in 2 years. another thing to consider is internal timing chain = higher maintenance cost.
I have the same tires and would have to say that they are pretty noisy. I have about 10K on them now and they get louder everyday.
