Prestone Antifreeze

Rating 4.0

I've used G12 and Prestone in one of my Corrados. No noticeable difference in performance or running temps. I did 100% complete system flush when changing over. I like the Prestone for availability.

Pros: no performance difference
Vehicle: Volkswagen Corrado

OEM Volkswagen Brake pads
RogueTDI
  • Braking:
Rating 5.0

Hmm, I find my Golf TDI brakes to be excellent. Havent tracked them, but have punished them on occasion with liberal use of power on the highway, even combined with going down hill, and have never experienced fade.

Pros: brakes are excellent
Cons: havent tracked them

Hawk Performance Brake pads

The stock pads chunked like mad upfront because it was a medium speed technical track with little room for brake cooling. You need Hawk HP plus or better for lapping these cars.

Pros: better for lapping
Cons: stock pads chunked
Vehicle: Volkswagen

OEM Volkswagen Automatic transmission fluid

I have a 2000 MKIV jetta with a 2.0 and automatic trans. I have never changed the trans fluid in that thing and it has 280,000+ miles...still runs strong. I have seen some guys change their tranny fluid suspecting they needed it and it only caused more problems. When VW says it's lifetime fluid...it's lifetime fluid.

Pros: lasts over 280,000 miles, still runs strong
Mileage: 450616 km

Akebono Brake pads

aftermarket pads will do that. I had the same problem on my passat, put in OEM pads and no more rattle. it was annoying as hell every little bump or crack in the road. The reason they supply those \"anti-rattle\" clips is because the pads ARE NOT made to oem specs. Only slightly oem specs and you get the play in the pad to bracket clearance like the pad is not tight in there. Those clips take up that space. I have used pads from just about every manufacturer, bendix, ate, wagner, ebc, monroe, bosch, beck arnley, raybestos. All not made to OEM specs. The only pads I have found that are close or good enough to oem are akebono but they tend to squeel if you glaze them from hard stopping. Cheap pads gets you cheap pads.

Pros: OEM pads resolve rattle
Cons: aftermarket pads cause rattle

POWER STOP Brake pads
Jaeastep
  • Braking:
  • Noise:
Rating 3.5

So I just got my powerstop kit installed yesterday. It was $355 from autoparts warehouse and they threw in free shipping. The kit looks pretty good the nickel plating looks very clean but they don't look as agressive as some of the other kits I've seen. The install was not bad at all although I ran into a snag resetting the rear calipers (I didn't do my homework on what tool to reset them with but I eventually got some help). On my first drive I was not impressed with the stopping power of the ceramic pads and the slotted cross drilled rotors (I was thinking it would have this incredible improvement because powerstop claims the pads don't need to be seated to be at peak performance). I beg to differ they were no different than my oem brakes at all yesterday while driving but after having put about 100 miles on them I am starting to see a lot of improvement in my stopping distances without having to mash the pedal. The pads were pretty noisy at first but today are dead quiet (unlike my oem pads). The pedal doesn't feel any different as far as weight but I don't have to press in on it as much to make sudden stops (I thought I was going to see my lunch again today while in Charlotte traffic at one point). Overall I think it isn't a bad upgrade for somebody on a budget like me who wants to have more performance out of your brake system that functions as an everyday driver or could be used on an autox day. I think I'm going to try it this year . I will try to post some pics of the car with the kit installed and keep you guys updated on how the kit feels if there is any changes over the next few weeks or any brake fade.

Pros: improvement in stopping distances, pads are quiet
Cons: noisy at first, seating required
Vehicle: Volkswagen
Mileage: 161 km

Fram Oil filter
snipeboomyurded
  • Warning light:
Rating 2.0

I used royal purple 5w-30, and a ****ty fram oil filter since I couldnt get a hold of any others. Anyway, Ive been driving my car everyday and its been running pretty much like it did before the oil change. All of the sudden yesterday when I started it, it sounded a little odd to me. I let it warm up and went on my way. Well as soon as I got on the road i noticed it, the turbo wasnt spooling until about 3200rpm (max boost). It used to hit max at about 2600

Pros: turbo spooling easier before
Cons: turbo lag, odd sound
Vehicle: Volkswagen
