MSD Ignition coil

I replaced the coil with a MSD high performance which was actually cheaper than any other brand, and had significantly better boots on it to keep the water problem from happening again. Haven’t had an issue in 2 years.

Pros: cheaper, better boots, no issues

AMSOIL Engine oil

Amsoil is just an above average full synthetic oil. It's nothing magical. It has a higher than normal "Total Base Number", which is what allows it to go longer between changes without going acidic.

Pros: higher Total Base Number
Cons: nothing magical

Donaldson Fuel filter

the donaldson P551315 off amazon or through ryder are the cheapest absolute 2 micron filters, have been running them on mine for the last 100k. Like $13/piece Much cheaper and I believe just as high of quality filters as the airdog branded stuff, perhaps superior.

Pros: cheapest, high quality, long lasting
Vehicle: Chevrolet
Mileage: 100000 km
Part number: P551315

When my wife bought her Bolt EV, sales people didn\u2019t even try to sell an extended warranty or extended service. my household have been driving EVs for 6 years; 70k miles and zero maintenance outside of rotating tires. Cheapest cars to operate and maintain.

Pros: cheapest to operate, maintain
Mileage: 70000 km

MICHELIN Tires

Have a 2017 Volt in Ottawa for the last 2+ years.

- Summer range is about 100km and winter range is about 65km

- Have a home charger so I don’t rely much on the chargers around the city. It is convenient at IKEA and the few other places.

- Totally worth having it as I used to spend about $220 a month in gas and that equates to about $25 a month in electricity.

- We have Michelin X-ice 3 tires and it works great in winter. Something useful about electric cars is that they are quite heavy due to the batteries so it assists with the traction.

Pros: works great in winter
Cons: winter range is about 65km

OEM Chevrolet Battery

We've been driving two EVs, a 2012 Leaf since Dec2011 and a 2017 Bolt since Sept 2017.

In the Bolt we lose about 40% range at -20 and lower. Bu the range is so good to begin with its not an issue.

Pros: good range
Cons: 40% range loss
Vehicle: Chevrolet Bolt

DUNLOP Tires
Power5
  • Grip:
  • Noise:
Rating 3.5

Have Dunlop Sig HP 235/45r17 on my Volt. Not a bad tire. Grip is much higher than the stockers of course. Weird thing though, around 2 different off ramps at a similar speed to the stock tires, the ESP light comes on. I know it is getting light on the back inside tire, but I am coasting, not braking. Though, not sure how the regen works with the rear tires. So maybe the car is braking the back tires at the same amount as the regen is braking the front axle? Either way, never got an ESP light on any cornering with stock tires, and get it occasionally with the new ones. Slight slight bit of howl, but coming from the crap hypermile OE tires, everything is going to be louder. For the price I paid, I will not complain a bit.

Pros: grip is much higher
Cons: ESP light comes on, slight howl

GENERAL MOTORS Head gasket
trbochrg
  • Overheating:
Rating 1.0

GM iron duke and pushrod 2.2. Underwhelming? I can attest to that. Had the 2.2L 118HP 4-cylinder engine in my first car. fan bearings decided to give up one day on the highway. Head gasket job twice in 85,000 miles.

Cons: fan bearings failure, head gasket issues
Vehicle: Chevrolet
Mileage: 85000 km
