I threw it back together with a high quality Victor Reinz brand head gasket, along with spraying the head gasket with permatex copper spray which would aid in sealing it with any imperfections in the surfaces... So far, it has not used a drop of coolant and the reservoir level doesn’t rise much while driving!

Pros: no coolant loss

OEM Subaru Head gasket

Use the MLS headgaskets... subaru part number 11044AA770. I never use the single layer gaskets when I do NA motors. Also stick with OEM parts. Especially when doing head gaskets.

Pros: OEM quality, reliable

replace them with the head gasket from the EJ255 or 257. They’re made of MLS and most shops do that in order to make it last longer since they rarely blow.

Pros: last longer, rarely blow

Old post but I can tell you what it probably is. The 1.8t engines are notorious for minor head gasket leaks my 2003 A4 Cabriolet did the same thing. I thought it was the check valve at fuel pump or fuel filter changed them. Crank sensor. Same thing.

A month or so later the radiator shits the bed, no warning lights until it goes into limp mode. I replace the H2O pump and thermostat just for good measure but ultimately it's got a cracked head gasket. I suspect this was an existing problem that was made much worse when I stupidly tried to drive it home after overheating lol. That was another $3k... honestly in the first 6 months that car was in the shop almost as often as it wasn't .

Cons: cracked head gasket, radiator failure

OEM Subaru Head gasket

My 2015 Crosstrek blew a head gasket at 141k, only once ever let the oil change get past 5000 miles. Been disappointed with this car so far, needing a new engine, it'll probably be the end of my Subaru ownership.

Cons: head gasket failure, engine replacement
Vehicle: Subaru
Mileage: 141000 km

I had the same happen with a Ford tempo GLS. Had the 2.3HO engine. Everytime I put water in the radiator the car wouldn't start. I took it in and mechanic said head gasket was shot and so was my engine.

Pros: fun car to drive
Cons: head gasket was shot
Vehicle: Ford
