Bosch Voltage regulator
ccswerks51
  • Warning light:
  • Electrical behavior:
Rating 5.0

i finally got it. so we were checking wires and stuff and everything was checking out ok and then with the car running we would check the alt. and still no voltage putting out. i was baffeled. so then i thought ill switch voltage regulators because what i did when the new alt. came in was that i changed the voltage regulator to a new one bought previously and had put that one in and installed the alt. so i changed voltage regulators and put the one that came with the new alt. and low and behold there was the problem. i turned the ignition on. the battery light came on in the instement cluster, started the car and boom there it was, the alt. was putting out 14 volts and we were good to go.

Pros: alt putting out 14 volts
Cons: no voltage putting out
Vehicle: Volkswagen Golf

OEM Volkswagen Alternator

Alternators don't make good battery chargers and if your alternator is on its way out then it may not be able to charge the battery. A fully charged battery measures 12.6V when the car is not started. When it's discharged by 75% then it measures 12.4V. if it's like 12V then it's totally dead. When you start the engine and the alternator turns, at idle you should have at least 13.4 Volts. If it's less than this then try reving the RPM's to like 2000rpm. You now should have at least 13.4V. If you don't then you have a problem either with the regulator or you have a bad diode.

Pros: fully charged battery 12.6V
Cons: alternator not battery charger
