OEM Volkswagen Coolant temperature sensor
bAN0NYM0US
  • Gauge behavior:
  • Warning light:
Rating 5.0

If it goes away when the car warms up then it’s a failing coolant temperature sensor. It’s dumping in excess fuel because there’s no cat and then when it finally warms up, the sensor starts working to reduce fueling.

Pros: sensor reduces fueling
Cons: dumping in excess fuel
Vehicle: Volkswagen Jetta

APR Brake pads

Had a 40AE GTI for a year and recently traded in for a 20AE R. Loved the GTI, got to take it to a few track days and it held up very well to the abuse with just proper brake pads and tires

Pros: held up well, track days
Vehicle: Volkswagen

OEM Volkswagen Brake pads
FeloMonk
  • Braking:
  • Noise:
Rating 3.0

Took my 2019 Golf R to the track with stock pads and rotors. The brakes started smelling really bad after 20 minutes of track time, and squealing a bit. Didn’t lose braking power significantly, but this is what they look like afterwards.

Cons: smelling bad, squealing

FEBI Brake pads
StanJacko
  • Braking:
Rating 3.0

I had to change the brake pads on couple of cars last week which used the FSIII brake calipers and all of the brake pads were missing the raised edge and they have been flat. In one case the customer wanted cheaper Febi pads so I thought it was just because of cost savings but to my surprise even TRW/ATE (OEM makers) pads have been like this.

Cons: missing raised edge, flat

Pirelli Tires

While braking on the big straight away, every single time I was sliding, ABS kicked on, and I had to counter steer, these tires are awful and got scrubbed hard. Imo I was not overdriving though, I didn't skid much, where I did, it was very brief.

Cons: sliding during braking, awful performance

BRIDGESTONE Tires

I had the Bridgestones on my Mk7.5 GTI and was very unhappy with them. When it was time to change tires (after only 12,000 miles) I went with the Michelin PSAS4 I was blown away by how much better they were.

Pros: Michelin much better
Cons: very unhappy
Vehicle: Volkswagen
Mileage: 12000 km
