Turned out the previous owner took care of it outside of maintenance. Fuel filter was totally clogged, we had to run engine cleaner through, get the tires realigned and some other stuff. Overall we went from 21mpg to 27mpg.

Additionally, fill the big primary fuel filter (spin-on type) with Liqui Moly Diesel Puge and put the rest in the tank. This should boost the cetane rating and clean up your injectors if they’re gummed up.
Drain tank and replace fuel filter, change oil, spark plugs
If you treat it right, the vw will outlast the Honda easily. If you're not going to be able to keep up with oil/ fluid/ dsg/ fuel filter etc... then you should get the Honda.

replaced the original filter in a 2000 540i with 150k miles with a Hengst, no difference in performance whatsoever, but i feel better

I have a 2020 Hino 335 I tried replacing the fuel filter with new one from dealer and it’s to wide and I can’t get it to spin on
