I run the H4 conversions from HELLA and they have been great. A lot more light than the old sealed beams and retains the stock look unlike the dorky looking LEDs. I ran a relay harness so they get power direct from the battery.

Pros: more light, stock look

Hella Headlights

I just came across new headlights made by Hella which are look alike VW MK5 versions and installed one to test the beam pattern on my GTI337. It appears that VW MK5 versions are newer one and due to that fact are engineered to put more light on the road. There is no visible cut out in a beam pattern like on OEM versions, but the MK5 look alike seem to be winning on my check list.

Pros: more light on the road
Cons: no visible cut out
Vehicle: Volkswagen

There are no alternatives. It’s OEM Hella or Chinese crap. There are no options in the middle. There used to be DJ Autos but have been long discontinued.

Get a set of Hellas. Restore them. It’s the best option and you’ll have great headlights for life

Pros: great headlights for life
Cons: no alternatives
Vehicle: BMW

significantly better than the Sylvania OE ones for light output, but with an OE style cutoff so you don’t blind other drivers.

Pros: better light output, OE style cutoff

what you do is chuck these in the garbage and just buy hella h4 replaceable 7" round headlights (they are glass as well so it wont fade/uv cooked) and stick with those. these offbrand amazon/ebay/temu/aliexpress halo led headlights have such garbage light output and beam pattern that you'd be better off just strapping led pen lights to the front of your car.

Pros: glass, wont fade
Cons: garbage light output

OEM Chevrolet Headlights

I'm a paramedic and we drive the chevy Demers ambulances. The headlights are extremely poor and unsafe to the point where i think demers/chevy is becoming legally negligent. Driving out to a suburban/outskirt town for a nightshift in my new car and then hopping into an ambulance to do a transfer back to the city and im like leaning over the steering wheel squinting to see the road at dusk, its such a stark contrast in headlight performance and throw.

Cons: extremely poor, unsafe
Vehicle: Chevrolet
