Husqvarna Gear oil

I've been using gear oil for the last 12,000kms and I'll never go back to chain lube ever it's far cheaper to use and keeps the chain extremely clean and because of it you don't have to use the chain cleaner as much cant recommend it enough

Pros: cheaper, keeps chain clean
Mileage: 12000 km

OEM Honda Gear oil

I started using it, as I noticed the Honda Unicorn Ownership Manual adviced using gear oil for chain lubrication. I started to notice that after using a spray the gunk used to really accumulate and mess up my sprockets when used during rains. Gear oil being thinner never had this issue and even lasted as much as the spray on chain.

Pros: thinner, lasts as long
Cons: gunk accumulation with spray
Vehicle: Honda

VALVOLINE Gear oil

I've used valvoline synthetic 75-90 for 6 years, two changes with no issues, $15 at walmart with squeezy bags or $12 at napa. Did mine yesterday, had about 50k / 3 years since my last change and honestly, they didn't need changed

Pros: no issues, didn't need changed
Mileage: 50000 km

Mobil Gear oil
SPEC-01
  • Noise:
Rating 3.0

This is in fact normal when moving from a dual-mass to single mass flywheel. It isn't a evidence of issues but rather the result of using a flywheel that is no longer dampened. Use of a thicker gear oil can reduce this noise a bit (but will not cause it to go away completly) and as such isn't a true remedy. I have personally tried using mobil 1 75w90 gear oil in the past and it does help a bit.

Pros: thicker gear oil helps
Cons: noise not completely gone

RED LINE Gear oil

I say nay. The only time in the 6 years that I have been driving Mk1/Mk2 VWs(count 12 of them) that I have used Redline gear oil, also happens to be the only time I have blown up a transmission.

Cons: blew up a transmission
Vehicle: Volkswagen
