-W221 Brembo calipers/rotors up front
Owner reviews for brake caliper
For brakes, I went with Willwood 4 piston calipers with 10.1in rotors and a disk conversion in the rear. So, now I can stop, and have a lil less scary ride.
Package arrived. Excellent packaging job! Truly a pleasurable transaction. Thank you again.
I rebuilt my front and rear for maybe $60 total in parts. Just O-rings and cylinders, they don't really get more simple than this. It's hard to find parts for vented girling calipers since all the guys with solid rotors buy the vented disc calipers as an upgrade.
Most expensive thing I've had to replace is a rear brake caliper
I need brakes for the front. I'm a whore for big brakes and have a few OEM options to pick from. I was going to use some 312mm from the Golf 4motion but I dug out a MK4 R32 set in need of a rebuild. They're 334mm with twin piston calipers so should look good behind whatever wheels I pick and also stop good.
I bought used ones on eBay. Came out nice but they were kinda rough.
Honestly the new caliper was cheap (also used Raybestos Element3), and the discs/pads are the same price as the 470. That said, there is zero difference in feel most of the time. I don’t get comments about ‘sporty’. The discs are just thicker and calipers a bit wider to suit, pads are exactly the same. The added mass means they don’t get heat soaked as quickly, but for regular use they felt the same. The big difference some people might feel is the difference between new/old pads/discs plus fresh brake fluid and new flex lines - that makes a huge difference.
The next thing that went wrong was the passenger side brake caliper seized up. I spent a grand on front brakes and rotors.
Now the brakes felt like they were grabbing. Dealership said they're wearing down way too fast and replaced brake calipers, rotors, and pads under warranty.
