My first car was a E46 316i, under 100tkm on odo, had it for 3 years, literally gave no problems.

Sold the E46 and got a E39 530D because I love them. Has been reliable so far, I've had it as daily for almost a year now and the only critical problems it has had are that the alternator gave out after a couple of weeks owning and EGR thermostat was bad.

Pros: reliable, no critical problems
Cons: alternator gave out, EGR thermostat bad

OEM BMW Thermostat

I recently moved on from a 2016 X3 35i (N55) with a little over 100k miles on it. The only things to break on it were the thermostat and a control board for one of the headlight modules. When I replaced the thermostat I did the water pump as a precaution.

Pros: only consumables
Cons: thermostat broke
Vehicle: BMW X3
Mileage: 160934 km

Rating 4.5

I bought a ‘14 435i Msport 4 years ago- it is the most reliable high end vehicle I’ve ever owned . A blast to drive and pretty economical- other than routine oil/brake fluid service, all I’ve had to do is OFHG, Valve cover gasket and engine mounts.

Pros: reliable, blast to drive
Cons: OFHG, valve cover gasket

OEM BMW Brake pads

If you find a used BMW that has been well taken care of, especially one with an inline 6 cylinder, you should have very few issues for 5 years of ownership. A few examples in my family… 2003 X5 4.4i just regular maintenance including new brakes for 5 years of ownership and 60k some miles.

Pros: regular maintenance
Cons: new brakes
Vehicle: BMW X5
Mileage: 96560 km

Here’s one, my 21 BMW 218 has quite high dims. I regularly get flashed to dim my light when they are dimmed. There is no dial / setting on the car that I’m aware of to adjust this. I asked BMW and they said I’d need to leave it in (which will cost €300 or something ridiculous).

Pros: high dims, regularly flashed
Cons: no setting to adjust

OEM BMW Battery

I had 8 years on original battery on 2017 750i. I replaced it. It was barely holding 12V. Few functions were not working like stop/start and such.

Pros: 8 years longevity
Cons: barely holding 12V, functions not working

OEM BMW Brake discs

You need the Msport brakes unless you want new rotors every 5,000 miles. Have a 540i that didn’t come with them and was a nightmare until I upgraded.

Cons: new rotors every 5000
Vehicle: BMW
Mileage: 5000 km

I bought a used 2021 BMW 5 series. I live in a rural area without streetlights, so it’s pitchblack on curvy 50mph roads lined with trees dropping limbs and large animals crossing. These headlights are dangerous. Can’t see without my high beams, yet there are oncoming cars every 3 seconds. I’m left driving blind half the time.

Cons: dangerous, poor visibility, needs high beams
