Firestone Tires

I like the set of firestone winterforce I just put on our XC70 this year so far. Took them out on snow/ice a few times so far and they feel like I would expect any dedicated winter tire to feel. What took me by surprise is how they drive in the dry... perfectly reasonable handling/braking and reasonable road noise for a winter tire. These actually handle and brake better in the dry than bridgestone weatherpeaks.

Pros: reasonable handling, reasonable noise

OEM Volvo Axle shaft
Robwol
  • Vibration:
  • Knocks:
Rating 4.0

In my instance the replacement of the part in Sept this year has stopped the noise completely.

In my instance, Volvo identified the clicking to be coming from NSF Drive Shaft and they replaced part no VO36013244 axle shaft, which was the left axle. This was completed in early September this year and the clicking/flapping noise disappeared. I do still feel vibration when flooring it but I can't hear that same noise.

Pros: noise disappeared completely
Cons: still feel vibration
Vehicle: Volvo
Part number: VO36013244

OEM Volvo Mirrors

I tried to replace the whole mirror on my 2006 S80 but got codes for the alarm system and the key fob would no longer work. It's because there is an antenna built into the mirror which is coded to the key (I suppose). Anyway, I found a good mirror at the salvage yard and disassembled it, figuring out how to not break anything on mine. The transplant was successful and I had zero errors/codes to deal with, nor any wiring issues.

Pros: successful transplant, zero errors
Cons: alarm codes, key fob issue
Vehicle: Volvo S80

OEM Volvo Cabin filter

My Volvo dealer wanted $200 to replace the cabin air filter and I declined, claiming it was a "$20 part and 10 minutes of labor. " It turns out I was wrong, it was a $22 part and 5 minutes of labor.

Pros: easy to replace
Cons: dealer overcharges
Vehicle: Volvo

OEM Volvo Brake pads
purrcthrowa
  • Braking:
  • Noise:
Rating 3.0

I had an 850R. It was great. However, two issues: the brakes were shit when they are hot (scarily so: I had a real squeaky bum moment when I tried to brake for a roundabout when I had be driving in an, er, *spirited* fashion*.* I mentioned this to a traffic cop and he said they always upgraded the brakes on 850s). However, unless you drive like a lunatic, I wouldn't have thought this was a major issue.

Pros: great, surprisingly small
Cons: brakes were shit
Vehicle: Volvo 850

Bosch Fuel injector

I replaced a bad fuel injector last year on cyl 5 with a Bosch unit, ordered through FCP Euro as to not get a counterfeit. I removed/tested/cleaned all 5 original injectors and confirmed cyl 5 injector was dead.

Cons: injector failure
Vehicle: Volvo C30
