I personally do an old and filter every 6-7000 km. I do it so frequently because, 1) I do it myself, so cost is down and I make sure the job is done right. 2) the sky active engines are known for carbon buildup, so more frequent oil changes should help. 3) Longevity, I want to see 300,000 or more on the dash one day.

An oil change with decent full synthetic is 30-40$ for 5 quarts + OEM filter for another 5-10$. It's relatively cheap to do every 6-8 months to know it always has decent oil, and no problems should arise.
Could be weather related. I'm in Canada and we have weather from -35C to +35C, so Mazda recommends oil changes every 8000km instead of 12,000km.
I use original Mazda oil and Nipparts for the filters. I live in Europe and I buy these for 80€ / 85$.
SOOOO I've always used full synthetic way before most vehicles started recommending it from the manufacturer. I've ran mobile 1, royal purple, and a few others. When we got our 2007 Mazda 3 all of the records/receipts showed conventional Castrol was used. I've stuck with it to see how it do... I've increased the weight "one step" because we live in a hotter than average climate but we just hit 290k miles with not major issues... my average MPG is 31.x and I typically do 10 over the speed limit (so it could definitely be improved).I change it myself every 5k miles. I think the frequency is more important than the quality with oil. I'd rather have super tech every 3k than mobile 1 every 10k. I think if you stick with any major brand, use a good filter, and change it regularly you'll be fine.
2016.5 CX-5 with 89,000 miles. So far I've had to replace the belt tensioner, accessories belt, water pump belt and breaks (technically I only needed pads and front rotors but I chose to just do them all in one shot since it made a negligible price difference since I was already doing the back pads.
I'm a huge fan of the All Weather Michelin CrossClimate 2 tires. Great in all conditions and amazing in snow even on our two wheel drive Mazda.
2012 Mazda3 2.0l Skyactiv 85k miles. No issues. Some of the more recent maintenance,
- Water pump belt and drive belt @ 80k (was beginning to shudder and vibrate at lower RPMs)
I noticed a coolant leak the other week and bang - this was the exact issue.
My 5.5 year old CX-5, with full service history, needs a new engine (at a cost of £9k) because the head gasket completely went without warning.
