I've replaced a radiator hose, a power steering pump, serpentine, clutch fan, a u joint, and I just did all four ball joints with Moog, and put shocks all around it at 190k this winter. I also just replaced all four o2 sensors when one went bad because at 191k....you figure you've gotten your money's worth!
Owner reviews for ball joint
I've got a 5.0 Explorer and it's been very reliable. I've replaced some wear items ( ball joints, hubs, tie rod ends, brakes) but parts are pretty cheap and it's easy to work on and they can be found fairly cheap.
You have to loosen the lower ball joint to lower arm bolts on the side to get a litlle more clearance on one side. On the other side completely unbolt the ball joint and swing it out of the way to drop the hub assembly more.
I just redid the front suspension on my GTI and used Meyle ball joints. The quality, fit, and feel is excellent.
Ok guys- I don't have much time, so I will cover the major issues for doing the install. The major issue is that you cannot reuse the stock MK4 balljoint. You must modify the TT balljoint to fit the GTI LCA. It takes a fair amount of grinding, drilling and fitting to make it fit as you can see in the pic. Not for the average DIYer.
meyle products are so-so quality, but their ball joints are the bottom of the trash pile. I've learned my lessons the hard way by using meyle components on my e30 BMW's. The parts are just poorly made pieces of poo.
