buy a Motorcraft air filter. It's OEM, excellent quality, and fairly inexpensive. I own a 2009 Ford Ranger, bought it new. Now 160K miles on the clock and still running well, Motorcraft parts only.

Pros: excellent quality, inexpensive, long-lasting
Vehicle: Ford Ranger
Mileage: 160000 km

I will say - go ahead and get the Honda OEM filter. It is a nice, lightly oiled unit that seems to filter really well.

Pros: filters really well, lightly oiled
Vehicle: Honda

I went to the auto parts store recently to buy an air filter. They only had one in stock, an STP. When replacing I noticed the old OEM one has around 100 pleats, the STP has around 65. I'm guessing more pleats = more surface area = better air flow. I didn't notice any difference driving it though. I think next time I'll buy an OEM one.

Pros: easy to replace
Cons: less pleats, no difference driving

I don’t recommend reusable performance filters since they can alter air flow enough that you end up running a little lean with a turbo charged engine. This is why a lot of turbo charged engines can’t just have a cold air intake slapped on without a tune. This actually occurred with my 08’ Subaru Legacy GT. Stick to a quality standard filter that offers optimal air flow and filtering capability.

Pros: optimal air flow
Cons: alter air flow, run lean
Vehicle: Subaru Legacy

KN avoid them they allow to much dirt to pass through, if you want higher quality go AFE Dry Pro.

Pros: higher quality AFE Dry Pro
Cons: allow too much dirt

Reusable K&N filters very marginally improve performance at the cost of allowing more dust and other particles into your engine. OEM paper filters or other reputable ones like WIX do a much better job of actually cleaning the air.

Pros: marginally improve performance
Cons: allowing more dust
