They always screw you in filters... I do those.
Owner reviews for air filter
I actually switched back from a short ram to the stock airbox recently and it completely changed how the car drives — smoother powerband, better MPG, and way better throttle response. I do miss the VTEC sound a little, but performance > noise for me.
Air filter change gets K&N.
That one doesn’t look too bad and it’s a Mann filter. They’re your go to brand for air, cabin, oil and fuel filters…… they make them for bmw, bag and a bunch of others.
Wanted turbo noises but couldn’t justify $200-$300. Parts : 3 inch OD - 3 inch OD pipe. K&N 3 inch filter, APR SAI Filter. Drilled a vaccum tap into pipe. Sounds really nice. I know not much gain but sounds good lol.
Wix air, oil, and cabin air filters are my go to. I get them in bulk from rock auto. I usually fill with mid grade gas, buying premium is usually more than a dollar over regular per gallon and it does not make up for it in better mileage. The new gen 4 coyote is not e85, they have no yellow indicator and do not have the ability to account for it. The gen 3 coyotes, between 2018? Or 2020 to 2023 had some oil burning issues due to the cylinder walls and mismatched pistons. It happened when they changed factories from Germany to the US. The transmissions prior to the 2023 update have a high rate of failure. Post 2023 they fixed them. My recommendations for trucks is to go with a 2024 or later model of whatever sort you're looking for, they have the gen 4 coyote, the fixed 10r80, and a refreshed design for the bumpers, headlights, and all the computers.
The only silly charges are for the cabin and engine air filters (33.90 + 55.34 + 215.00 = $304.24 yikes!) and the serpentine belt replacement (64.46 + 215.00 = $279.46 yikes!).
Changing all three of these things (air filters and serpentine belt) would take about 10 minutes for a high school kid who's changed similar parts on a Ford or Toyota before, or maybe up to 30 minutes for someone with zero experience who watches some DIY videos on YouTube.
I also dislike how serpentine belts have been rebranded into "drive belts" because everyone knows changing a serpentine belt requires one wrench and takes 2 minutes on most cars (including 997's), but nobody knows what a "drive belt" is (but it sounds important if you want to drive!).
$29.53 each for six spark plugs that cost $10.50 each (by exact model number FGR-5-KQE0) at Pelican Parts is also a bit high; I would expect a shop to charge maybe 50% over retail for parts, so maybe $15 - $16 per spark plug would be more reasonable. It's not terribly much money in the long run but gives you an indication that the shop is willing to gouge you anywhere and everywhere.
But overall, a mostly fair invoice.
Did an air filter replacement on my ‘02 Outback the night before I took it to work. Didn’t seat the airbox properly and the (EJ251?) ran off MAP so it ran fine at lower power levels/speeds but struggled to make power (and subsequently flashed the CEL) once I got on the highway.
First step, if it still has the k&n air filter in it, throw that piece of shit away amd get a decent paper filter.
No it’s not worth it.
