Rating 4.0

I had to replace the battery on a 2016 Crosstrek this summer and, in retrospect, missed a bunch of warning signs before it finally wouldn’t start: slow cranking, occasional extra crank needed, flickering dash lights, and generally dim interior lights.

Pros: fixed starting issue
Cons: slow cranking, dim lights
Vehicle: Subaru

OEM Subaru Engine oil

Rating 4.0

My wife’s 2012 Impreza is at 195k miles and I switched it to 0w-30 and then 5w-30 due to oil consumption. Was burning a quart every 1K miles on 0w-20, burns half that on 5w-30. I’m actually considering going thicker.

Pros: burns half that
Cons: oil consumption
Mileage: 195000 km

OEM Subaru Engine oil

The dealership here itself was using 5w-30 as the default for oil changes even though 0w-20 is stamped on the filler cap. After checking myself that Subaru said that would be OK, I started using it too for my own changes just to avoid flipping back and forth -- though I have no idea if that would be a problem. In any case, the Forester seems happy, even if the mileage may have dipped slightly.

Pros: Forester seems happy
Cons: mileage may have dipped

OEM Subaru Strut assembly

Ran original stock struts on my 2012 Outback until this year and 145k miles. And they honestly weren’t even terrible yet, just starting to notice ride quality start to suffer.

Pros: long lasting, decent quality
Cons: ride quality suffered
Mileage: 233354 km

OEM Subaru Head gasket

Yes, I replaced the head gaskets in our 2008 2.5 non turbo Outback at 120k miles. They started leaking oil externally at probably 80k miles.

Cons: leaking oil externally
Vehicle: Subaru Outback
Mileage: 193121 km

had three head gaskets done over a couple of years, second one told the put in a new timing belt while there in there , mechanic said it looked good , third time they finally used the correct gaskets, had heads surfaced, new head bolts, a few months later started leaking oil from the head gasket, they tightened 2 head bolts to fix it, poor fix but it worked

Pros: correct gaskets used
Cons: leaking oil, poor fix
