Denso Ignition coil
Gonesh
  • Starting:
  • Warning light:
Rating 5.0

Short answer - it was the ignition coil. In the end - it serves as a reminder that just because a code (or lack of) seems to point to a specific component, you MUST diagnose. ECM costs $300 - $1000 including coding - a Denso ignition coil was just over $100.

Pros: Denso ignition coil fixed
Cons: ECM replacement expensive

SUNNY Tires
jldude84
  • Grip:
  • Ride comfort:
Rating 4.0

For what it's worth, I used to run the cheapest 235/40ZR18 tires I could find on my Jetta(Sunny brand if I recall), after a few years, I never had any complaints. Paid about $105 each and they seemed worth the money to me and not much different than the name brands($200+ each), at least as far as durability/safety was concerned

Pros: worth the money
Cons: not high performance

Bosch Alternator
Irishamerican
  • Warning light:
Rating 4.0

Update: There was a direct short in the alternator and when it shorted internally it also took out the 200 amp protection fuse ($115) too for the battery. I got a new Bosch unit and I was happy to find out I did not have to bring it to the nearest dealership and that a local German repair shop were able to do it.

Pros: new unit, local repair shop
Cons: direct short, protection fuse
Mileage: 47800 km

VAICO Antifreeze
Master_P
  • Temperature stability:
Rating 5.0

Buy 5L Vaico brand G13. Flush the system several times with distilled water. Then drain and purge with compressed air. Disconnect the heater core lines. Then pour in all 5L of pure antifreeze, and top off with distilled water.

Pros: acceptable mixture

INA Oil pan
fopeano
  • No leaks:
Rating 5.0

I had bought this INA oil pan for the old car because it could corner well enough that I had oil starvation problems around some longer turns. I figured that it's an even worse problem to have with a K20 because it uses oil pressure to control valve and camshaft timing, so I had to find a solution to that.

Pros: solves oil starvation problems
Vehicle: Volkswagen Jetta

Bosch Wiper blades

I just purchased a set of Bosch Icon wiper blades(19OE & 24OE) for my wife's '11 Jetta and I can't figure out how the heck to put them on. I took off the plastic piece that it comes with and tried to slide them into place between the walls but it seems that they have these little plastic edges that stick out and don't allow me to get the full mount inside.

Cons: difficult to install
Part number: 19OE & 24OE
