Sachs 764 Pressure Plate & Sachs 098 Friction Disc paired with a DMFW is what is colloquially referred to as the Sachs 2.5 "kit". ( it's not an actual "kit" but it's a time honored upgrade for 550+ hp Porsche 996 TT.
I've run stock Sachs also with an unsprung GT2 disc. But my car at 550/575 whp likes this setup ^.
I'm on my 3rd clutch = 17+ years.
Transmission itself is great. Could be other things as mentioned here but common issue outside actuators/TCM would be the clutch in the bell housing. Recommend when accelerating from a stop to go heavier on the gas so it engages more hard. Could prob dive it like that for a few years but eventually will gunk up with enough dust inside that the actuators won’t be able to move the forks. Most shops will charge $3,500+ to replace. If you’re good with DIY you can prob do the job when the time comes yourself for about $750 for the Luk repset and dual clutch trans fluid.
Never had a problem with them and the last kit I bought was only £60 (and was LUK).
Got a suggestion from one of the local service technicians, to go for SACHS brand clutch kit.
Wouldn’t trust anything but the luk kit at this point. Ur talking maybe $100 difference for something that might be fine be something proven to be oem quality.
So, if you just take that flywheel to a machine shop to scuff it up, lathe it down to have a perfect fresh surface, you can just put a new LuK or Sachs clutch kit on it.
If your clutch has been slipping for a few months, it seems likely your flywheel may have some hot spots, and needs resurfaced at a minimum, in addition to a new clutch, pilot bushing, and throwout bearing.
If stock or mild performance gains, take the m20 flywheel and a stock m20 sachs clutch kit (bmw always sachs) and it will hold up very easily. They can hold way more torque than they are advertised for and last forever if not clutchkicked to hell.
I had a clutch kit (LUK) put in my 1998 Ranger 2WD back in March 2025. Approximately 10,000 miles ago. Had issues with it recently and took it back to shop. Shop called today and said clutch kit is warrantied but not labor.
Sorry to burst this bubble, that I was hoping to benefit from, but I ordered from Rock Auto, it arrived today, and the Sachs kit is no longer an FCC friction disk with caged springs. The springs are no longer caged like OEM. The pressure plate also, although it looks similar is also not marked as FCC, both are just marked with weird Sachs part numbers that don't co-relate with any searches that I have done, but they do match the numbers on the outside of the Sachs box it shipped in. Both bearings are still marked as Nachi and Japan. The Sachs box says made in Japan on the outside, but the design of the friction disc is different and there is no FCC branding on either the disk or the plate. I'm not sure how much I missed this deal by, but I was gutted to find out this is no longer the deal that it was. Returning it tomorrow.
