One of the reasons rs4’s hold their value is due to no timing failure.
Yes they are timing chain. I bought my wife a 2016 sport 5spd new and its almost 80k miles now, only repair is the line going from the res to the slave started leaking, replaced that and all is good, no other leaks, doesn't appear to use any oil between changes and no other repairs.
I owned one, put 100k miles on it and never had a single issue with anything that wasn't caused by abuse. At that mileage you will want to listen to the timing chains as it may need new guides and tensioners.
I switched to Liqui Moly from motul and the timing chains quieted down. Not sure if that really means anything though. I found both were good performance and lasted well.
A Cloyes double roller timing chain I got from them snapped on a freshly rebuilt 5.0 Ford, bending 9 valves and breaking two pistons. It said Cloyes on the box but china on the links
my biggest gripe with the vr6 is that to do any major work to it you need to pull it and the transmission out of the car. Want to put in cams? Pull it out of the car. Want to change the head gasket? pull it out of the car. need to Pull a worn rod? pull it out of the car. This is all the result of VW putting the timing chain ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE ENGINE!
