I could only find the thermostat from VW for roughly $45.
Owner reviews for thermostat
Buy an OEM thermostat from Mazda. The aftermarket ones are sometimes not identical.
By the way, that Gates thermostat (good brand - OEM quality, includes gasket) is $24, delivered, while AutoZone in my area wants $32
Bruce and I and my Dad replaced the thermostat, timing belt, water pump, and thermostat on the P. All went well, except that VW doesn't know how to do their job very well and got the wrong pulleys. But they did get everything else correct, and for a good price too.
Put in a STANT. That was 3 years ago. No problem since.
I use duralast on my last 3 vehicles no problem.
Car takes forever to warm up and seems to always be running rich, so I'm guessing either the thermostat or ECT, or both, is/are bad.
Changed to genuine thermostat, no change. Needle tends to dip on higher load highway driving, but only occasionally. Obd temp is between 77C-88C.
mine is also a problem an my car is 1.5 yrs old. Sometimes the temp gauge acts as if it is -40C outside even if it is a couple degrees above freezing. Often the car will take 4-5minutes to get near base idle when it is cool outside, but when it's really cold, sometimes it takes 30seconds and there is no way it's warmed up. Can also smell coolant anytime I open the hood. Sad.
I had my water pump and thermostat changed in August under warranty. I went for an oil change in Dec and they told me they think the thermostat is leaking. I told them they just replaced it 4 months ago. They went back and cleaned up the area around the thermostat and oil pan and said we need to monitor it to see if it's really leaking again. They were not surprised when I asked if it was possible it could be leaking again. They told me they see the part fail all the time.
