OEM Lexus Oil filter

I no longer use the dealer, found a local guy that allows me to watch while he is working on car, only requirement is its after business hours, usually the service takes about an hour for basic oil change.

I take my own Lexus OEM Oil, oil filter and air filters, I even take my own flash lights to inspect underneath the car and in the engine bay.

Along the way I ask the tech questions like are tie-rods good, springs shocks, brakes pads, he so helpful shows me how to check things.

Pros: helpful tech, cheap service

Hengst Oil filter

My E550 gets M1 0W40 every 5k, with a new fleece Hengst filter. I don't drive it hard until I see past 80C on the water temp (I don't have an oil temp gauge- only the E63s do). Basically the same procedure I use on my S54 BMWs, and every performance car I've ever owned

Pros: new fleece filter, part of care regimen

K&N Oil filter

If you're vehicle manufacturer has an extended change interval then this filter will work with that. Some Porsches have 20,000 mile changes intervals and this filter is able to last that interval. Do the oil change as is recommended by your manufacturer. The K&N oil filters are killer and treat your car well.

Pros: long lasting, good quality
Vehicle: Porsche
Mileage: 20000 km

AMSOIL Oil filter

I have experience with the long drain intervals from Amsoil. I have 2 dodge vehicles with 3.6L engines both at around 130,000 km and I use the signature series 5w20 with Amsoil filter and I go about 18,000 km before I change the oil.

Pros: long drain intervals
Vehicle: Dodge
Mileage: 130000 km

Fram Oil filter

I typically go with Mobil 1. Fram has been manufacturing filters that use a little flap of tin for the bypass spring which comes on during high oil pressure situations, and at least in Canada i have seen these fail quite early. And not one or two, but closer to 3/10 i have cut open. I should cut more open as my observations are now a bit dated but in my opinion if it has a actual bypass spring inside of it, they will be more effective in the long run since the ones with a actual bypass spring inside of the filter i have personally never seen one fail yet.

And with filter media, you want it to be the vacuum bag. The canister that simply catches the most crap is not exactly the smallest micron rating, but the filter that returns to normal operation reliably when the vehicle hits operating temperature. And if that filter seems too expensive to run, then you really cannot afford to replace the engine.

Edit: Also it is worth checking out your factory supplied oil filter as they usually spring the bypass correctly for the designed engine oil pressure.

Pros: reliable operation, good filter media
Cons: tin bypass spring fails

Fram Oil filter

Fram filters are trash. I bought a fram for a new engine and upon fire up the lifters would clatter while it refilled the filter.

Cons: trash, lifter clatter
