BERU Ignition coil

I am currently using the cheaper version because I just never put in the 'thought-to-be-bad' pack back in [btw, it was an injector so both packs were perfectly fine]. With that in mind, I cannot say there was any quality increase because it was never my CP to begin with so it was still misfiring even with the $350 BERU. But, what they did both do is act exactly the same when I put them both in. I have not had any problems thus far with the cheaper one, and it feels about the exact same quality as the beru brand.

Pros: same quality as Beru

Changed the plugs, and while changing them noticed that there was a little charring in two of the coil paks seating surface where the spark plug tip sits...after changing the plugs the car still felt like ****. Ran to Advanced....and they showed 2 cylinders not firing good, needless to say they only stocked one coil pak. I replaced it and the car ran like a champ.

Pros: car ran like a champ
Cons: car still felt like ****

HITACHI Ignition coil

The old AWD hitachi coils are far more reliable in my experience. I would not change to the awp style from the bolt downs. I have had ~8 failed AWP coils over the years on my 2001 audi/2002 gti and I have 8 hitachis now in my 2 1.8t's for a few years now and no hitachi failures. This is with track days on the gti. They also bolt down so you won't have them popping up on you whack a mole style like the awp ones sometimes do

Pros: more reliable, no failures
Cons: awp style unreliable
Vehicle: Audi

MSD Ignition coil

I had a intermittant misfire that wouldn't go away.. changed out coilpacks, plugs, wires, nothing made a bit of difference. Installed the MSD coilpacks, and the MSD wires and viola, misfire was gone. Regardless, the cost of a stock coilpack + wires far exceedes the cost of the MSD setup.

Pros: solved intermittant misfire, cost effective
Vehicle: Volkswagen

MSD Ignition coil

I found the MSD setup to be a very nice upgrade. Might have just been a mental thing, but I felt that it gave the motor a little more pep and it revved a bit faster.

Pros: gave motor more pep, revved a bit faster
Cons: might be a mental thing
Vehicle: Volkswagen

MSD Ignition coil

I went with MSD. I can say that the car definitely runs a bit smoother, but I did it for a different reason. I figured in the long run it will be cheaper. If one of the coilpacks goes bad I 'll only be spending $42 instead of having to buy an entire coilpack. Even if all three went bad all at once it would still be less expensive than the cost of a new "oem" coilpack.

Pros: runs a bit smoother, cheaper in the long run
Vehicle: Volkswagen

BERU Ignition coil

Has anyone ever experienced an odd electrical type humming sound eminating from the front of the dash after putting in a new ignition coil??? I put in a Beru Coil and I could swear I now hear a faint hum that wasn't there prior to installing the new one. It kind of sounds like the radio with the sound way low when it picks up engine frequencies (but I know it's not that). It definitely sounds electrical and not mechanical and I've noticed the hum increases in frequency when I increase the rpm's. Do coils even make any noise??? Thanks.

Pros: faint hum increases with rpm
Cons: odd electrical humming sound

Yep, guess it's common, but mine just caused a smoking fire under the hood! As mentioned, I just started the car in the a.m. and was backing out of the garage. It started sounding and acting funny as explained and the engine light was blinking.

Cons: caused smoking fire
