I ended up getting a brand new Bosch ignition coil from German Autoparts for around $160 shipped with a few other small parts. This was around November last year.

Go Bosch, or Go Badly.
Stick with the Hitachi coils. I only had one fail in 80K miles on my car and 40k of that is BT.
I had the snap in Bremi coils in my 2001 AWW and I replaced them with the Hitachi coils. It smoothed out my idle quite a bit.
anyway, my friend put one in his Toyota truck and it smoothed out his idle and boosted midrange
0,5l/100km less fuel consumption, consistent, and what is most important, my Golf was the only car that started by itself this winter at -30 C outside, among about 30 cars in our courtyard.
I highly recommend this one: It gives probably the hottest spark out there, is a direct replacement to oem coil and is not expensive (~$30).
I put an msd blaster coil #8220 in my fox and it works fine... No ping and I also get better fuel mileage due to a hotter spark for a clean burn.
I have a 1776 and was running the pertronix with the bosch blue. Rebuilt the top half of the motor and now have a MSD coil (because it was the only one I could get on the weekend), and I have noticed no changes in engine performance.
Yes, those coils are generally junk, with the Telefunken ones being the worst. The casing cracks near the output to the distributor causing it to arc.
