K&N Air filter

K&N if it's available. Million mile warranty, and never need to purchase another filter... ever. All you have to do is every few months take it out and clean it, then spray with the recharging oil and reinstall. I've had one on every single vehicle I've ever owned. The HP and MPG gains are smaller than advertised, but still noticeable.

Pros: million mile warranty, reusable, noticeable gains
Cons: gains smaller than advertised
Vehicle: Nissan

I've been waiting for all the replacement parts to come in to start tackling the Cabby Overhaul... Today I decided to have a look at the air filter... I was sort of shocked... but not entirely considering it had been sitting for a while before the previous owner picked it up a year ago. I was more shocked that the PO didn't swap out the filter. Man... as well as the car runs in its current state... I can only imagine how well she'll run after a much deserved tune up.

Pros: car runs well
Cons: filter was very dirty
Vehicle: Volkswagen

Basically...modest if any gains involved with going with a straight drop in.....the only real benefit IMO....is that for the $60 air filter...you never have to buy another one again...that's the main benefit as far as I'm concerned.

Pros: never buy another one
Cons: modest if any gains
Vehicle: Volkswagen

One problem that you can have with the K&N over the stock air filter is over-oiling by novice users. If you over-oil it and the extra oil gets onto the mass air flow sensor, you will need to replace the sensor. Supposedly they aren't cheap either. K&N filters can also be a pain to take care of too. When they get dirty, you have to wash them and re-oil them. This adds another time to screw up.

Cons: over-oiling risk, hard to care
Vehicle: Volkswagen Touareg

I've used the air filters made by Amsoil in my current Jetta. I wasn't impressed. The air filter left dust particles on the inside of my intake tube so that was taken out soon after it was installed.

Cons: left dust particles inside intake
