the paper filter is better for maybe the first 500 miles, after that the K&N breathes better and does not lose its air flow/filtration over time

Pros: breathes better, doesn't lose airflow

Here is a 2.0 owner with a 1999 GL and 56K on the clock. I decided to use K&N drop in filter as a replacement on the CAI. So here is what I noticed after I put K&N on my puny 2.0: 1. 1.7 - 2.3 EXTRA mpg 2. Better throtle reponse, especially above 3K rpms 3. No problems concerning the MAF and oil flying off the filter I think my $45.87 was well spent!

Pros: extra MPG, better throttle response, no MAF problems

K&N Air filter

I just turned over 9K on my car. installed a K&N on the day I got the car with 34 miles on the clock. After reading your post the other day on this subject, I decided to check my MAF and intake for signs of mineral oil. There were no signs of it. Not on this car, or the Jetta 1.8T I had before this one. I ran that car with a K&N panel filter for for approx. 36,000 miles until I sold it for the GTI. I have owned (6) cars in my life. (4) of them had K&N filters in them. I have never had a problem with any of them as a result of these filters.

Pros: no signs of mineral oil, no problems
Vehicle: Volkswagen
Mileage: 9000 km

Agreed ^^ I did mine a wek ago and the sound is great! The DV is definately audible now and the turbo spools a little quicker and whines louder! You'll get a little better mileage like alreadt stated and I'm sure you'll gain a few HP, but its not very noticeable.

Pros: great sound, DV audible, turbo spools quicker, better mileage
Cons: HP gain not very noticeable
Vehicle: Volkswagen

K&N Air filter

The K&N drop in is nice. I don't want to do a CAI, so it's a good compromise. I don't know if there is much perfomance gains, the 1.8T feels a little stronger with the drop in filter. The sound is great though. I put my new filter in last weekend and took a friend out and he was loving the sound of the turbo and DV coming through the stock air box. Nothing too crazy like a CAI or BOV, but it definetly makes alittle more noise.

Pros: good compromise, feels stronger, great sound, more noise
Vehicle: Volkswagen

K&N Air filter

I have a K&N in my BMW and it has helped with fuel consumption - however - it was a pro install and has a cold air duct fitted to the front grille. The car was then also dyno tuned to optimise the better airflow. However - I take the benefit in fewer filter changes and better fuel consumption.

Pros: improved fuel consumption, fewer filter changes
Cons: requires pro install, needs dyno tuning

K&N Air filter

i had the same problem when i fitted a K&N filter on my 2000 Jetta, I probably overoiled that thing and it clogged my MAF. I didnt notice any gains maybe its just all hype but I will not use a K&N filter on my Passat.

Cons: clogged MAF, no performance gains
