Honestly, go with the premixed Subaru blue coolant. It has the correct additives and will not harm the engine.

I always keep a gallon on hand and only needed to top up small loss from summer driving in my previous Outback.

Pros: correct additives, no engine harm, minimal loss

OEM Subaru Head gasket

Rating 4.5

it was from the garbage head gasket era, and it still had its original factory head gaskets on it when I finally pulled the motor to turbo swap it earlier this year. It had 270,000km on it. So overall, for 10 years of ownership it was pretty damn reliable.

Pros: long lasting, original factory
Vehicle: Subaru Forester
Mileage: 270000 km

OEM Subaru Starter motor

Rating 5.0

Subaru knew their customers were gonna pitch a fit about this so they way overbuilt the starter. It’s rated for 260,000 starts which breaks down to a little over 70/day every single day for 10 years. It’s also physically much larger than the standard starter from previous generations.

Pros: overbuilt, high durability rating, physically larger
Vehicle: Subaru Outback

OEM Subaru AC compressor

Rating 3.0

The only problem I've had with my recently acquired 2014 XV is that it still has the old version of the ac compressor, which isn't a cheap fix. AC still works intermittently, though, I just have to toggle it on and off every few minutes.

Cons: AC works intermittently
Vehicle: Subaru XV

This happened to me during rush hour on a busy street! 2020 Legacy, they told me it was a known issue with the battery and replaced it for free. It was an incredibly stressful morning though.

Pros: replaced for free
Cons: stressful morning, known issue
Vehicle: Subaru Legacy

I had this problem with my 2019 Forester in stop and go traffic on the Dallas North Tollway. I was able to force the car into park and shut it off and back on manually, and this happened about a half dozen more times before my dealer finally admitted that there was a class action on those batteries. I’ve since had it replaced two additional times under a labor warranty. Like I guess it’s fine because it’s free, but very annoying that I bought a Subaru for reliability and I’m in the shop at least every 9 months for a new battery.

Pros: replaced under warranty
Cons: repeated failures, annoying, frequent replacements

The auto start/stop failed to start the car today while waiting in a left hand turn lane at a red light in traffic. Potentially dangerous situation for anyone. Fortunately the person behind me got out of his car and pushed my car across two traffic lanes to the right curb. The Subaru dealer told me last week when I had the 42k mile maintenance done that the battery was fine based on a battery test. I had specifically asked for the battery to be checked because the starts sounded weak. Now I’m back at the dealer after the failure incident and the diagnoses is a bad battery. It is not safe to have the car automatically shut down on the road when the battery does not have the power to auto start.

Cons: failed to start, weak starts, bad battery
Vehicle: Subaru Legacy
Mileage: 67592 km

OEM Subaru Windshield

I’m about to replace my 5th windshield on my 2022 Outback. Subaru doesn’t acknowledge anything out of the ordinary. I’ve contacted them multiple times. No impact at all. I park in garage and next day it’s cracked. Totally normal to Subaru.

Cons: cracks appear spontaneously

I have a 2024 Outback Onyx. The headlights are super bright and I'm always getting flashed as though I have my high beams on when I don't.

Pros: super bright
Cons: getting flashed
