I agree with everyone saying starter. My 986 made this exact sound for a week or two before the starter completely died. Replaced starter and all was good.

It\u2019s the starter and has no major effect whatsoever. Mine has been doing it for a year and my Porsche mechanic says he can replace the starter but he\u2019s never seen them go out because of the sound.
With the old starter I got a couple slow cranks. with the new starter I get nothing. I think it has something to do with this relay. Oh, and P.S. after pulling out the old starter I tested it on the bench and it won't spin, so it's definitely bad.
