Changing the oil is actually super easy on these cars. The oil filler is in the trunk and has its own little funnel (brilliant design) and the oil filter hangs straight down off the bottom of the engine.

I can't recommend the 2nd gen cars enough. I bought my 958 on a whim because dieselgate deal and ended up absolutely falling in love with it. As far as costs, surprisingly in my case, it was "nothing is cheaper than an expensive Porsche." YMMV, getting dieselgate pricing and selling during a boom obviously helped, but I just sold it on Monday after 2.5 yrs, having it from 60k-90k, and trade-in (towards another Cayenne) was more than I had paid. In terms of maintenance, only things not on the schedule were brakes once and the winter tires once, wipers twice, and fixed one broken e-brake and one broken brake bleeder.
I enjoy the wedge-look of my 944 when the headlights are down. I don't mind the look when they're up, but they just look better down.
The novelty was cool right after purchasing the car, but now I'm more worried about something breaking with them and having to pay a big repair bill for something pretty simple.
replacing the rad with a new oem unit made my Temps run very normal. Almost boringly normal.
They're great pads, and when you've fried them you'll get a new set under FCP Euro's lifetime warranty.
Changed the fuel filter today. Had it sitting around for a while but haven't gotten around to it. Surprised by how much of an effect it had on the car. The car pulls noticeably better and smoother from the low end now.
Next up was replacing the spark plugs and the distributor finger and distributor cap. Car ran noticeably better and smoother.
I've sealed the muffler with paste which confirmed it was the problem (noise, responsiveness). That fix is only temporary, though.
18 months ago the timing chain catastrophically failed causing extensive damage to the engine & costing me £15,000 for a complete engine rebuild with genuine Porsche parts.
Best was a factory 944 Turbo water pump, bought from Porsche. It was a raw casting. No machining work at all.
