I have a 2003 Boxster S with the later 3.2L three chain engine and six speed, with the later glass top which I bought 10 years ago. These are the sweet spot for the 986 in my opinion. This one now has 70k on it and other than maintenance (oil changes, filters, plugs, etc.), a water pump, brakes, an AOS, a clutch (before me), a window regulator and tie rod ends, it hasn't needed any work. Compared to other German cars at 21 years old, that is nothing. I did install a 996 instrument cluster, a factory valved PSE exhaust, factory console delete (recommended if you are tall) and some Alcantara trim.

I had a 996.2 and an early 2.5L 986 and I loved the Boxster more. One of the best cars I've owned. I drove it back and forth from NC to WI several times. I am 6'5" and had luggage room to spare. It made better sounds than the 996. It was not very fast. It was pretty easy to work on and every single DIY job is well documented online. It was really comfortable. The handling is awesome, the brakes are awesome. Even the base ones.
My Indy is $180 plus supplies (I give them the oil and filter)
I own a 1999 996 C2. I have had the car for over 10 years. I bought it with 70k miles, and it now has 169,000 miles.
It is in the garage now waiting for front brakes. Have the parts, just got busy.
I'm not sure if it counts, but I put porsche brakes on the front and TTRS brakes on the rear.
Skip the brake fluid flush. Go find tires elsewhere. I have a Macan and got non N rated all season tires. Way cheaper than what Porsche will sell you.
I also supplied new rotors, pads, and all fluids and pads. My bill was $650 at a Porsche specific independent shop.
Great car. Ugly headlights
My indy Porsche mechanic told me they had to charge a Cayenne owner 3500+ to replace a headlight. He said even the headlight has a microchip now. Just unnecessary complexity.
Had an alignment done at a Porsche dealer here in TX, gave them a printout of the specs a shop in CA had aligned it to. Come to find out they were way off and I ended up destroying the inside edge of my front track tires.
