BRIDGESTONE Tires

I've experienced the Bridgestones on my Volvo for nearly two years, and am fairly impressed with their performance... for an all-season. Dry grip is great and treadwear is respectable.

Pros: dry grip is great

GENERAL MOTORS Alternator

Here is a stock Mk2 65 amp alternator (top) and the generic one-wire GM alternator (bottom). They're physically the same size, and the posts are almost identical in length. The GM fan is indented in the center though, and the VW one is flat. I used the GM fan, cause my stocker is disgusting, lol. I swapped the VW hardware/pulley over, since the GM pulley was obviously no good (flat, not offset).

Pros: same size, easy swap
Cons: GM pulley no good

OEM Volvo Brake cylinder

$1,800 for a '91 Volvo 940 Turbo. It was running good, had ok tires, and got me through 2 years (needed a brake master cylinder after a year, though). Overall, ok deal... it scooted better after a manual boost controller, but the turbo was on it's way out.

Pros: running good, ok tires
Cons: turbo was on way out

OEM Volvo Knock sensor
winstonsmith84
  • Power:
  • Pinging:
Rating 4.0

I would think it should. I can see prolonged use of low octane fuel or high boost situations, but occasional accidental use of 87 octane should not grenade the motor. Something must have been wrong with that car or the gas. Knock sensors do work. Hear a ping, back the timing down and cut the boost. This is how my Volvo V70 works.

Pros: knock sensors do work
Cons: major difference in timing
Vehicle: Volvo V70

Cooper Tires
Sporin
  • Grip:
  • Ride comfort:
Rating 4.0

I've run them on both a RWD Volvo 240 and now on my Accord. I like them. They were great in the heavy snows we got up here last winter, they wear very well, and (at least around me) they are relatively cheap.

Pros: great in heavy snows, wear very well
Cons: lumpier on dry roads
Vehicle: Volvo

NITTO Tires

I had Nitto NeoGen's on my Volvo s40 and I loved them. They kept tread for almost 2 years and were sticky on dry roads. Not bad in wet either.

Pros: sticky on dry roads, kept tread
Cons: not bad in wet
Vehicle: Volvo S40

OEM Volvo Shock absorbers
dalba4
  • Bottoming:
Rating 3.0

I had to shave the piss outta the bushings my volvo HD's. Came from early 80's 240. A bit stiffer then the HD's I have in the front. A note, I was running a helper spring on the rear, added about 2 on the rear end, the volvo application shocks used to top out regularly.

Pros: stiffer than front HD's
Cons: shocks topped out regularly
Vehicle: Volvo
