The OE Goodyear Wrangers on my 2022 TRD Off-Read were finally due for replacement, so over the weekend, my Tacoma got some new shoes…265/75R16 Toyo Open Country A/TIII. I went with SL load rated because I don’t really need anything more, and they are only 4 lbs. heavier than the OE Goodyears.

I debated for a while between these, Falken Wildpeak A/T4W, and Cooper Discoverer Road+Trail AT, but ultimately decided on the Toyos based on the number of complaints about balancing issues with the Falkens, and the look of the Toyo vs. the Cooper.

After a weekend of doing a fair bit of driving, I’m quite happy with them. I’m running the stock TRD Off-Road suspension, stock wheels, with mudguards, and there is zero rubbing. The mudguards seemed to be the wildcard regarding rubbing, and I couldn’t find a solid answer…so for those wondering, there you go. Around town and on the highway, there is slightly more road noise than with the OE Goodyear Wranglers, but it is probably something that only those paying attention to it would really notice.

I’m still playing around with air pressures to find what works best. The tire shop had them at 36 psi, which warmed up to 39 psi when I got home, and was way too harsh. People seemed to recommend 30-35 psi for 265/75R16 tires on the Tacoma, so I split the difference, and aired them down to 33 psi, which warms up to 35/36 psi. After driving around with them like that all weekend, it’s much better…there’s a bit more road noise at 33 psi when they are cold, but once they warm up past 34 psi they quiet down. So we’ll see how that goes, but I am curious what tire pressures others are running.

But yeah, initial impressions are very good.

Pros: good initial impressions, no rubbing, smoother ride
Cons: slight road noise, harsh at high pressure

MICHELIN Tires

I’ve been running Michelin Defender 2 on my Toyota Camry year round since 2020 and it does very well every single winter with no issues at all. Fully sipped tires do help for grip on snow and ice.

Pros: very well in winter, good grip

The Michelins are smoother, quieter and have far better traction and thus handling. I got them because they have an 80K miles warranty and are rated #1 by “that” consumer magazine.

Pros: smoother, quieter, better traction, 80K warranty

Shell Engine oil

I had an 03 Camry from new till 2019. Had 335,000 miles when I sold it. That car got Rotella T6 5w40 since new. I still wonder how long that car would have lasted if I kept it.

Pros: long engine life, good performance
Mileage: 335000 km

EAGLE EYES Headlights
DirtyTaco48
  • Condensation:
Rating 3.0

That said, I have used eBay headlight before, specifically the brand Eagle Eyes (for my daily Camry, not Taco). Things to be concerned about is mainly the lens to housing seal. A lot of cheaper lights will allow condensation to get inside the lenses. Quick fix though.

Pros: quick fix available
Cons: condensation inside lenses

OEM Toyota Windshield
YouLeaveMeAlone
  • Chips/cracks:
Rating 0.5

Owned 3 weeks, getting replaced Wednesday. I was parked in my garage for a week while I was out of town… came back to a crack (no kids, no pets, nothing from ceiling). Crack almost dead center starting from bottom, no chips or impact marks. Drove to windshield repair place 5 miles away, it had grown. The said it could still be fixed and couldn’t find any impact marks. Made appt for next day, by then crack had tripled in dive just sitting in the garage. Now being replaced with non-OEM glass since OEM glass sucks.

Cons: cracked without impact, crack grew rapidly, poor OEM quality
Vehicle: Toyota Tundra
