We have had our 2008 for a year and a half. It is a Komfort with 6spd manual and 2.0T. Bought it with 42k on it, currently has about 80k. Problems we have had so far are intake manifold, fuel injector cleaning, and waterpump. Overall we have been really happy with the car.

Pros: drives well, plenty of room
Cons: intake manifold, waterpump
Vehicle: Volkswagen Passat B6
Mileage: 128747 km

OEM Volkswagen Water pump

So it turned out to be the water pump. According to the service manager, they've had plenty of TSI engines come through with the same problem and he wasn't surprised about my issue. The repair was covered under the powertrain warranty. I'm happy to have my Tig back.

Pros: repair covered under warranty
Mileage: 40000 km

Irregardless of what route you go, just make sure your water pump has a metal impeller and not a plastic one. The plastic one (factory on many VW) chips off and degrades over time causing all kinds of cooling issues.

Pros: metal impeller
Cons: plastic one chips off
Vehicle: Volkswagen

I have this problem. I have been hearing the noise on and off for about 6 months. It only lasts for a few seconds and usually happens at lights or when idling before I turn it off. It could never be replicated, I never saw a loss in power or performance so I haven't had a clue what to do.

Pros: noise on and off
Cons: hard to replicate
Vehicle: Volkswagen
Mileage: 9500 km

The stock pump failed back in Feb 2010, so i ordered a GRAF pump with metal impeller from ECS Tuning. Purchase was made on 1/27/10, parts got here on 2/03/10, and I installed pump late Feb 2010. Mileage was 127,257 when pump, timing belt, tensioner were done. In the middle of 2010, a loud grinding started at the front passenger side of the engine. I took everything apart and found the water pump with bearing grease or some waxy chunky crap all over the outside of it and on the inside of the timing belt cover like it splattered, and the pump leaking from the shaft. Car now has 135,362 miles on it, so thats complete pump failure within 8,069 miles.

Cons: pump failure within 8,069 miles
Mileage: 8069 km
Part number: 06A121011L

I bought my 2001 Jetta with 80k on it. It came with a broken water pump (plastic) plus 6 belt valves and a quarter of the teeth missing from the timing belt. The pump was in about 30 pieces and the damage to the valves was do to the water pump.

Cons: broken water pump, valve damage
Mileage: 80000 km
