Generally the OEM plastic water pump only lasts as long as the timing belt interval. I wouldn't rule it out since the overflow water you might be seeing could just be water which is expanding or boiling as you increase the engine speed.

Pros: lasts timing belt interval
Cons: plastic water pump

Water pump 1 failed during the original warranty. Water pump 2 failed just outside of the new extended warranty for them I think I was at like 101,000 miles. Water pump 3 has now failed. I think im at like 110,000. Im really sick of being stranded in the middle of the night after work and Im sick of paying over $$$ for this obvious problem that everyone knows is a problem with these cars. I cant replace water pumps on average every 3 years. This isnt normal. Im 40 years old and have had many, many cars and 2 work trucks. I have never has a water pump fail on any car ever other than this one.

Cons: repeated failures, high cost
Vehicle: Volkswagen
Mileage: 110000 km

OEM Volkswagen Water pump

When doing your own maintenance, a problem may arise in the event of a recall. My application under the water pump recall for my previous Tiguan (1st Gen - PQ) was denied even though it was replaced at a VW dealer because I did not show "convincing evidence" of having followed the scheduled coolant maintenance despite including my aftermarket receipts with miles and dates.

Cons: recall application denied
