Tires Hankook or OEM Volkswagen

Hankook Tires

I love my Hankook Ions, my MYP had the Pirelli Pzeros as my original set.

One thing that hasn’t been mentioned is the road noise and how much quieter the drive is.

Pros: quieter drive

I’ve had both and the biggest difference I saw was the range hit. I was the sole driver so no difference in driving style - MPS AS4’s were 10% worse. Loved them but would go with the Hankooks were I to do it again.

Pros: would go again
Cons: none

The Hankooks are slightly softer absorbing a smidge more of the road. Noise difference between the 2 isn't noticeable at all. The Hankooks are slightly more efficient, lifetime on the Michelins is 306whm and the Hankooks are 297whm(tracked via TeslaMate).

Pros: slightly more efficient
Cons: slightly softer

So my OEM Hankook tires, inflated normally to 40psi were wearing down on the edges of the tire. The look of the tire is amazing. Completely changes the look of the truck. The tires didn’t have any more appreciable noise - I listened intently at 40 mph and might have heard a bit more

Pros: amazing look, little noise
Cons: wearing down on edges
Mileage: 26000 km

With about 28,000 miles on my 2022 SEL AWD, it was time to replace the the Michelin's. I picked the Ions because it seemed like Hankook did their homework in terms of designing a tire with range and longevity considerations. Initial thoughts:

-VERY QUIET. These are somehow substantially quieter than the OEM wheels. Noise from bumps and rough roads are somehow soaked up as well. I'm impressed.

-Smooth and planted. Rolling on these at moderate speeds feels like floating on a cloud. Steering and acceleration/braking felt great too, no issues feeling like there's no grip.

-Didn't have too much rain experience, but it seemed to handle wet conditions fine, about the same as OEM.

-One con I noticed: These have a foam lining on the inside.

Pros: VERY QUIET, smooth and planted
Cons: foam lining inside
Mileage: 45061 km

Go with the hankooks, they wear like iron.

If you are new to tracking and do end up heat cycling them out, they are super consistent, which is way better to learn from.

Pros: wear like iron
Cons: heat cycling them out
Vehicle: BMW

Only fly in the ointment seems to be the OEM tires, Hankook Kinergy GTs. I've noticed, in the very short time we've had the car, that they are noticeably noisier than the Cooper Endeavors we had on our trade in, and the Michelin Cross Climate 2s we have on our other car.

Cons: noticeably noisier

If you're just driving on dry pavement, they're ok. They are absolutely horrible on wet pavement (poor grip and hydroplane easy). My daily driver came with them on it new and couldn't wait to get them off.

Pros: ok on dry pavement
Cons: horrible on wet pavement
Mileage: 20000 km
