Steering rack OEM BMW or OEM Honda

OEM BMW Steering rack

You have to trim a good 2 inches out of your firewall depending on where your rack is mounted. I’ve found that all racks are not perfectly the same and some require more trimming. I used a bur bit and die grinder and got it done in a few minutes. I also made my own grommet plate from Abs plastic. The z3 rack is by far the best thing I’ve done to the e30.

Pros: best upgrade, improved handling
Cons: firewall trimming required

In terms of performance, bushings have already been covered, but I haven’t see a Z3 steering rack been mentioned yet. It basically makes the steering snappier and the car feels more go-kart-y.

Pros: steering snappier, go-kart-y feel

I have installed two Z3 racks, I love it... Bought both used on Ebay from CA from low mileage cars and look fantastic, wouldn't hesitate buying used from a salvage if you know the mileage.

Pros: love it, look fantastic

I’m having the same problem too!!! I went in to one service center and was told your car is good no issues. He pretty much told me the same thing about that how the car is supposed to drive . I’m like dude I’ve been driving for 20 yrs so I think I know how a car is supposed to drive! I went to another service center and they told me they found an issue. They ordered the part but of course on back order.

Cons: sticky steering issue, part on back order, difficult diagnosis

My 2023 civic just started doing this. I noticed it today while driving on the freeway - I would try to make small adjustments to stay centered in my lane, and the steering wheel would fight me so I had to make bigger adjustments than I should have. I’m irritated with this steering problem and will take my car back in if this keeps happening

Cons: steering wheel fights, irritated with problem

My car only sticks after 5-10 minutes of driving. Gets progressively more apparent with time. Speed must be over 40 to really feel. Worst sticks are on freeway curves to the left then trying to adjust to the right.

Cons: steering sticks, progressively worse, difficult to adjust

I tried to get the car repaired by Honda, they refused (3 times), and so I was one of the people that filed a complaint with the NHTSA.

I received a letter last week from Honda informing me of the recall and immediately made an appt to get it inspected. Upon bringing it to the dealer, I let the service adviser know I have been having steering issues with the car. He immediately begins to doubt me and try to convince me that maybe it's just how the car is supposed to drive, despite the fact that I was there for a recall on the steering wheel. I cut him off, told him I know what normal steering is, and that there is an issue with the car that needs to be repaired. I politely requested they inspect it and get back to me.

Two hours later, I receive a call saying the car passed the inspection and that I was all good to go. I was furious but I requested a ride along. The tech was a cool guy and once I explained to him how to recreate the problem, he tried it out for himself and then he was able to notice it. He said he was going to try to help me out and would contact the Honda tech advisers to have them walk him through diagnostics. Lo and behold, they call me next day and tell me that there is an issue with the steering rack and they're going to replace it under the recall.

The part is on backorder which I expected, but what frustrates me is the great lengths I had to go to convince Honda that there was an issue with the car. It also makes me wonder how many people with faulty steering racks are they letting drive off the lot, despite there being a recall? I love the Civic, but this experience has been super frustrating and definitely makes me reconsider whether I want a Honda for my next car.

Cons: faulty steering rack, difficult to get repaired

Started occuring around 5,000 miles on my 23 Si. Currently at 9,000 miles, and gets stuck very frequently. First started as just a sticky/notch feeling. Now at low speeds you can audibly hear the rack when it gets bound up. Through corners, steering doesn't return to center every time, and on straight aways, gets bound pretty much every 10-15 seconds.

Cons: gets stuck frequently, audible noise, doesn't return to center
