Oil changes every 7-7.5k miles MAX with the correct oil and a good quality oil filter.
Garage was 100% right in changing the filter, if they don't, your just putting old shit in new oil.
Always use BMW genuine oil or Liqui Moly, along with BMW OEM M oil filters, which are made in Austria and feature an ultra-fine mesh for superior filtering.
VW Genuine filters used on all oil changes too.
I’ve done this method for 10 years on my tuned 15’ Golf TSI. Since brand new to 150k miles. I change the filter every other oil change... The factory filters are rated for 10,000 miles I don’t see an issue but I do have an issue of leaving oil in that long, which is why I changed it at 5000 mile intervals.
Euro 0-20, BMW oil filter from Amz, $11.00 (buy filter and give to the oil change shop), always make sure oil change shop gets oil filter cover and oil pan screw torqued at 25 lbs (18 nm).
Tbf the b6 passat will probably rust away just by existing before the engine gives up. That being said, 1.4tsi engine is not great not terrible. Many problems with them are caused by lack of maintenance and by cheap oil filters.
I'd just recommend getting a VW oil filter. Some of the aftermarkets are really cheap and can collapse in on themselves.
Something is wrong with this model. I hate dealership workshops because you get gouged.
B5 Passat (and Audi A4, same gen), 1.8T.
Filter - a big-ass 1.5 liter spin-on - mounted at an angle, directly above the front subframe.
Remove from top, after relocating the coolant tank.
Strategically use absorbent mat (floor diaper) to contain the inevitable spill.
