Brake pads EBC or Akebono

One really good thing about EBC pads is that they have the break in compound on them. If your rotors are not bad enough to make the brake pedal pulse, the pads will refinish the rotors with the compound. It will take the shine off and give the rotors a freshly machined surface without actually having them turned! After installing the pads, to my surprise, my rotors were COMPLETELY pulse free after a little break-in time!!!

Pros: refinish rotors, pulse free

I went with reds I installed EBC reds front and rear. Dustless and better stopping power without the initial grab of the stockers. I'm happy with them.

Pros: dustless, better stopping power

I have been running EBC yellow's on pretty much ALL my cars for the last 7-8 years. They always make a noticeable difference. On a GTI PP it seems like way more than that, the initial bite is just unbelievable (and I've bedded them in, it's not the initial bedding compound they put on them). I feel like I've gone up to a 6pot caliper! Guess the OEM pads SUCK and the OEM PP brakes have way better potential than I thought. With just a pad upgrade I feel like the brakes are totally up to the extra 50-60% HP I have over stock

Pros: noticeable difference, unbelievable bite
Cons: OEM pads suck

I replaced mine a few years ago with new rotors from Zimmerman since it was the third change and I have been very happy with them. The stopping distance seems to be a bit better and more responsive. Also, they produce much less dust than the OEM VW pads and I believe have Kevlar mixed in the compound.

Pros: better stopping distance, responsive
Cons: rotors needed replacement
Vehicle: Volkswagen
Mileage: 32186 km

Sorry it's a little late, but I've been using EBC yellows on my MK6 for double duty and I have no complaints other than the dust. They certainly make no noise.

Pros: make no noise
Cons: dusty

I put EBC Red stuff on my GTI (non-PP). I thought the stock pads were too aggressive when driving around town. The reds are less touchy when lightly applied and stop quite well. Very little brake dust. I'm very happy with them.

Pros: less brake dust, stop well
Cons: less touchy when applied
Vehicle: Volkswagen

Akebono ceramic pads (ACT888) - not much brake dust, good cold bite, good wet bite. EBC rotors. Rockauto will have them - great website, btw. I got EBC simply because the rotor hats are painted black. My g35 had the rotor hats with a red ring of rust on them, looked awful. In hindsight, really any rotors will be fine. Centric premiums are ok, probably around 50 bucks each - I think they have the black painted hats as well. Akenbono pads were maybe 100 for the 4. I think I got those on Amazon. They have ones that are OEM form factor. Drilled/slotted are for racing applications, not so much for dd. Not necessary to spend the money on those. And by racing, I mean you are stomping on your brakes 20 times in 5 minutes, for 10 laps. You'll end up replacing the pads and rotors pretty quickly due to the sheer heat involved in constant hard braking. So the longevity involved is... 1 track day, or two track days. Brake pads and rotors are fundamentally a wear item. The pads/rotors will wear over time regardless of DBA's "kangeroo paw" ventilation system - DBA 4/5000's are what, 200 bucks a pop. It really doesn't matter. You should get 25,000 miles out of pretty much any set of brake pads and rotors almost regardless of what brand they are. No reason to buy 800 dollar set vs 2-300 dollar set unless you are literally a racetrack driver. I'm betting my EBC rotors and Akebono pad combo will last about 50,000 miles, seeing as how my sedan is a dd that I pack my kids into.

Pros: good cold bite, good wet bite, low dust
Vehicle: Infiniti
Mileage: 50000 km
Part number: ACT888

FWIW - I used EBC yellows with S3 single piston calipers on the track with both my A3 and now my TT. The EBC usually only lasted one track weekend, prone to brake fad, and ate up the rotors (both stock and StopTech) pretty bad. I have Pagid RSL29 now on the front (with EBC rotors), and they are fantastic on the track. I didnt realize how much the yellows under-performed until I got the Pagids. Just passing it along...

Pros: fantastic on the track
Cons: prone to brake fad
Vehicle: Audi TT
