OEM Jeep Water pump

Replaced same component on a 13 Wrangler 6 months ago. Dealer wanted 900 for the repair. A local west coast mechanic said they’d do it for 300. Took me two hours on my own & $90.

Pros: easy to replace, saved money
Cons: dealer price too high
Vehicle: Jeep Wrangler

AISIN Water pump

I'd swap them out for multi-layer steel gaskets and new head bolts. Given the engine is in good order and hasn't had a gasket failure yet I'd say you'd be fine skipping the head decking and just install the new gaskets after a good cleaning.

Pros: good order, easy cleaning

OEM Volkswagen Water pump

For the Atlas I can only do oil and my front breaks on my own, rest the shop has to do. But all VW’s are more focused on performance than accessibility. If you buy an atlas, keep a good $500 set away as a just incase. My car has had an issue with one of the valve seal on the water pump- again super common and I was able to fix it myself. Other than that it’s genuinely been one of the most reliable cars I’ve had, at 150,000km she’s still going strong. It’s really good in the winter, and it’s never struggled to turn over in -40 c and gets warm after 10 minutes still. Only thing that sucks is atleast on the 2018 model the hood extends slightly too far so you can’t leave your windshield wipers up.

Pros: reliable car, good in winter
Cons: gas guzzler, plastic guard annoying
Vehicle: Volkswagen
Mileage: 150000 km

OEM Audi Water pump

I brought my 2018 SQ5 in two weeks ago for an oil change and cylinder inspection. Tech said it’s mild scoring but he also said there are beginning signs of water pump failure.

Cons: beginning signs of failure
Vehicle: Audi SQ5
Mileage: 90000 km

I also had the Gates pump leak within 6 months. The input shaft seal was leaking. Gates used to be a great brand but these pumps are garbage.

Cons: leaking input shaft seal, short lifespan, poor quality

I’ve gone through about 3 water pumps all within 10-30k kilometres and each time it’s something leaking other than the gaskets. Either the freeze plug starts to leak or the actual water pump does. Luckily i bought it through napa and they’ve been giving me new ones under warranty but the job takes about 4 hours and each time i have to buy new coolant which is starting to get expensive. The cheapest OEM pump i’ve found from mopar was 1000cad which in itself is crazy because the napa/gates are about $170

Cons: repeated leaks, short lifespan, expensive coolant
