The aftermarket Mahle gasket works just fine. The key is to torque it down EXACTLY to factory specs to prevent leaking.

Pros: works just fine, no leaking

Along with the diaphgragm valve (see the links above) you'll need to replace all the gaskets you disturb, namely the valve cover gasket (part no. 03H 103 483 C) and the gaskets that seal the upper intake manifold to the lower intake manifold (4 x 03H 133 237 G and 2 x 03H 133 237 J).

My main issue w/ the valve cover leak was a bad gasket. I had time to change it not too long ago, and so far no signs of external leaks on driveway or engine.

Pros: no external leaks
Cons: bad gasket

I've put 6000 miles on my new-to-me N54 135i, BMW PPI said the car was clear. New turbos, waste gates, injectors, coil packs, spark plugs, and valve cover gasket...now it runs great!

Pros: now it runs great
Vehicle: BMW
Mileage: 6000 km

At some point the valve cover gaskets leaked (it might be a common problem) which I fixed myself with a tube of Permatex.

Pros: cheap to own

I got OEM valve cover gaskets when I changed mine, but had to redo the one side, trick was to just use a small amount of silicone at the one spot that always seems to leak.

Cons: prone to leaks, difficult to seal

BMW valve cover gaskets.

Had to do the repair twice. The second time, the guy told me these parts have a lifetime of only 70k miles because of the heat and also I need to replace a few hoses due to the subsequent oil leaks.

Cons: short lifetime, oil leaks
Mileage: 70000 km
