I have 225/45-17 Michelin Pilot Alpin 2's on S-line 5 spoke wheels, worked perfect last year in quite a few storms, great on ice, I could drive comfortably at 40-50 MPH on unplowed highway

I run 155/80/13 Nokian Hakkapeliitta 5 and haven't been stuck yet. Those tires are the best hands down and are studdable.

Primarily you want thin and narrow. I ran all season Falken-512 195 50 15 last winter and had no problems.

From what I have read these are great tires.

I've run them on both a RWD Volvo 240 and now on my Accord. I like them. They were great in the heavy snows we got up here last winter, they wear very well, and (at least around me) they are relatively cheap.

I've got a set of Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D on the STI this year. So far I've been impressed.

I have Hankook Ice Bear W300's on the Mazdaspeed 3 and I like them a lot. I actually first used them on the Miata. Not the most extreme winter tire but NJ has very mild winters and they behave a lot like an all season in the dry which is perfect for me.

The tires I had on my 20th were recalled because of some side wall crakcing that caused them to leak air and les schwab sold me a set of 225/40/18 Toyo somehting or other for $312 out the door because of the hassle I went through with the recalled set I bought from them.

I just put my winter tires on. Dunlop wintersport M3. I have used these for 2 winters already, they have a decent amount of tread left. Maybe 20,000 miles total use on the tires already. 90% highway. I notice that the car now rides much more harsh than it does on the summer tires. It also makes a lot of noise. Almost like a wheel bearing or something. Way more noise than I remember from last winter!
