I used koni sports on my mk4 and they were awesome. Front and rear adjustable. It takes a couple days of adjusting to get them how you like them.

Pros: awesome performance, front and rear adjustable
Cons: takes days to adjust
Part number: SPORTS

Bilstein Shock absorbers

I put bilstein 5100 on all four corners of my previous tahoe and replaced all the blown auto-ride shocks. Even with the maxed out keys up front and overall firmer ride up front with little to no downtravel, it still rode far better than stock.

Pros: rode far better than stock
Cons: little to no downtravel
Vehicle: Chevrolet Tahoe

The bilsteins are a great upgrade over stock and are also the least expensive. They will offer a better ride than stock as well as take more of a beating.

Pros: better ride than stock
Cons: least expensive

I have the Koni Special Actives with the R wagon springs. I love them. They work as advertised; they're more plush over small and mid-sized bumps, offer much better damping over large bumps, and they stiffen up nicely when pushed in the corners. For a road car I really think these are the best option out there. One thing about them though is that they're over-damped if you're too low. They work great with the R wagon springs, but I'm not sure they'll work well if you're any lower.

Pros: plush over bumps, better damping, stiffen in corners
Cons: over-damped if too low
Part number: SPECIAL ACTIVES

I have the rear yellows. They're great paired with stock springs. Unfortunately they must be removed to adjust.

Cons: must be removed to adjust

In all seriousness, in my experience KYB shocks and struts are merely adequate. This is subjective, but they've always felt fairly harsh to me, in numerous different cars.

Pros: merely adequate
Cons: felt fairly harsh

The original shocks were completely shot so I replaced them with Bilstein B6 shocks. The ride feels incredibly stiff on most roads.

Cons: ride feels incredibly stiff
Vehicle: Chevrolet
