Pulled the trans, fixed the oil pan and valve cover gaskets, rod & main bearings, oil pump, new tires, battery, all exterior light housings, fuel fill hose, dash lights, gear position indicator, several sensors, new wipers, window cranks, windshield, tinted the windows, new headliner, new carpet, and the list just goes on and on.

Oil pan gasket, valve cover gasket and oil filter housing gaskets all leak, and service your transfer case regularly, also make sure you had your VANOS recall completed, the bolts sheer off

the oil pan gasket I bought from BMW - that's not something I would take a risk with as it's a big job and the price different is small...

So I looked some more and ended up finding it. It was coming from the front of the pan by two bolts. I did go to VW and they said it was the oil pan gasket.

Had my 2014 535 in for front control arm replacement (99k miles) and technician said it has an oil pan gasket leak. I haven't been adding oil or seeing any leakage on the ground. Cost quoted was $1900. Asked the tech to send me a pic of the leak. He did, and from what I saw it looks more like normal seepage for an engine with 99k miles on it. I'm not worried about it.

Those BMW oil pan gaskets don't usually leak much oil at all. They seep pretty small amounts and make a mess on the pan and bellhousing, but I've never seen one leak appreciable quantities of oil.

My outback has 40k on it and it's already been in the shop to replace the lower oil pan gasket 3 times, and the upper oil pan gasket (which they had to pull the whole motor out to replace!) once. Who knows how many thousands of dollars I would have paid if I didn't have the warranty to get the work done free.
