AMSOIL Engine oil

It's a little more pricey but extends change intervals and has worked for me. Keeps engine temps a bit cooler as well.

Pros: extends change intervals, keeps temps cooler
Cons: a little more pricey

Shell Engine oil

I have done really well with Shell Rotella T6 5w-40 as well. All are good oils that you can get away with changing every 5-6,000 miles.

Pros: done really well, good oil
Vehicle: Volkswagen
Mileage: 9656 km

Castrol Engine oil

I'm using Edge 5w-30 too. Seems to do well in 1.8t... This is the dealer OE oil, if it's VW 504 it could be a problem with lowered additive levels for emissions protection, which does not work well with our fuel and engine tune in North America, although it is necessary to use in TDIs (VW 507). imo, Edge is the best of all words, a premium base oil, but with more additives than VW 504 or other low saps oil.

Pros: premium base oil, more additives

Castrol Engine oil

I use Castrol 10w-40 and it works great. I have no issues with the cam follower and also never have to add oil in between oil changes.

Pros: works great, no oil addition needed
Part number: 10W-40

When I bought my golf, the PO was using crap gas station brand 5w30, the first weekend I had the car I switched to Motul synth 5w40. No leaks and drastically reduced oil consumption compared to what the PO said it was going through and it's been great ever since. I have since switched from Motul 8100 X-cess to Gulf Formula G (still 5w40) and noticed even less oil burning. I drove 4700kms across Canada at a constant 3300-4200 rpm for 4 days, oil level barely went down a drop.

Pros: reduced oil consumption, no leaks
Cons: crap gas station brand 5w30
Mileage: 4700 km

Mobil Engine oil

At around 60k the car really began consuming oil (1qt every 2000 miles or so). I used to use regular 5w-30 oil, and then switched to Pennzoil full synthetic 5w-30, which didn't help the problem at all, and maybe even made it worse. Finally, i switched to Mobil 1 0w-40 and all consumption has basically come to an end. I've not had to put a drop in it after 1500 miles and its at the same level as the last oil change.

Pros: consumption basically came to end
Cons: consumption increased with Pennzoil
Mileage: 96560 km
