The automatic 8-speed is an Aisin transmission (Toyota), and coming from a manual, I didn’t think I would like it - but it’s good and I do.

if you still want a reliable old school torque converter 6-speed auto on a commuter car, Mazda still sticks with them. And they're good!
I like the VW automatic. It's a dual clutch fluid system, no tourqe converter but Iis automatic.
I have been very pleased with the 6-speed automatic transmission from Aisin. This car just passed 110,000 miles. Even with sometimes aggressive daily driving over the last 7 years this drivetrain has required no repairs and still seems to perform about as well as it did the first year.
The FWD and eurocentric Cougar was quite popular among college kids coming from middle class families; before the mk4 Jetta and NB came along. I remember seeing many of these in wrecking yards that were in relatively great shape; starting around the later part of last decade. Most of them end up there with just a bad auto tranny.
Auto transmission is bad for towing. Keep it in lower ratios towing up hills. If the torque converter starts to slip the whole thing shuts down.
The automatics are torque limited to protect the weak transmission. They are also a lot less efficient than the manual.
The sweet three speed automatic tranny is starting to miss shifts however.
Ang masasabi ko lang ay stay away from ford focus/fiesta na automatic. Madaming cheap na ganyan sa market.
I wouldn’t want a crappy transmission that isn’t fun AND can’t hold power
