The automatic 8-speed is an Aisin transmission (Toyota), and coming from a manual, I didn’t think I would like it - but it’s good and I do.

Pros: good performance, pleasant surprise
Vehicle: Volkswagen Jetta

I have been very pleased with the 6-speed automatic transmission from Aisin. This car just passed 110,000 miles. Even with sometimes aggressive daily driving over the last 7 years this drivetrain has required no repairs and still seems to perform about as well as it did the first year.

Pros: required no repairs, performs well
Vehicle: Volkswagen Passat
Mileage: 177027 km

The FWD and eurocentric Cougar was quite popular among college kids coming from middle class families; before the mk4 Jetta and NB came along. I remember seeing many of these in wrecking yards that were in relatively great shape; starting around the later part of last decade. Most of them end up there with just a bad auto tranny.

Pros: popular among college kids
Cons: bad auto tranny

Mitsuboshi Automatic transmission

Auto transmission is bad for towing. Keep it in lower ratios towing up hills. If the torque converter starts to slip the whole thing shuts down.

Cons: bad for towing, torque converter slips
Vehicle: Mitsubishi Challenger
