Same here, and I almost have 200,000 miles on her. According to Prestone, their green stuff will not damage the engine and or gaskets.
Owner reviews for antifreeze
for vw's; i prefer using the 50/50 coolant from the dealer my gf's 2.0 had a small leak for months and we just kept on topping it off with the pepboys stuff-- but once i replaced the thermostat housing you can see corrosion in the hoses and the old housing -the coolant from vw is quite different than aftermarket brands (you can really tell just from its thickness-- i suggest forking the dough over for the vw stuff -other cars; i don't know
G12 may cost 12 bucks a gallon, but you only need one gallon and the manual states it is good for the life of your vehicle.
i run the G12 - every vw i ran G11 in, the coolant broke down after 5k miles, but the minute i swiched to g12, i have yet to have a problem
The mk3 came with G11 coolant. The mk4 came with G12 coolant. I'm running G12 in a well-flushed mk3 radiator, and I have no problems.
Regarding genuine VW antifreeze and generic...from what I understand, anitfreeze like Prestone is phosphate free but the real VW antifreeze (Pentosin) also has protectants for the plastic parts of the system, etc. The genuine stuff really isn't that expensive from the dealer.
I'm using 50/50 orange coolant (I forget if it's Prestone or Zerex, silver bottle with an orange top) same as I've always used.
Dude just get a NON PHOSPHATE, NON SILICATE COOLANT, it does not matter who makes it or color. BTW Prestone extended life is great and what I run and u can find it for about 8 dollars a gallon, all u need. just flush it really good.
I'm using the Prestone Dexcool, It's supposed to be compatible, and i'm starting with a totally dry system.
i changed my coolant with the prestone orange stuff ( i cant rem the real name for it ) . i called a vw dealer and they said that it will work just fine. i have had no problems with mine so u should be fine
