I had the alternator changed in one of my Phaetons. The overhead light was fluctuating when the engine was running. The problem was fixed when the tech replaced the alternator under warranty.
finally, i got tired of re-charging my car, that i finally got rid of that P.O.S. motorola alternator and swapped on a bosch reman.. been golden ever since then.
Bought the new Valeo, removed the Bosch, and got the Valeo installed. All is well, and I have a rebuildable Bosch 120A on hand-- no core charge w the new Alt.
Since the new alternator cost me $100, and the plugs and cables $50, why not! I've never even changed my oil before, but I just changed my friggin' alternator. Now, my car is running sooo much better, and my check engine light is gone.
Here is a stock Mk2 65 amp alternator (top) and the generic one-wire GM alternator (bottom). They're physically the same size, and the posts are almost identical in length. The GM fan is indented in the center though, and the VW one is flat. I used the GM fan, cause my stocker is disgusting, lol. I swapped the VW hardware/pulley over, since the GM pulley was obviously no good (flat, not offset).
Had a noise when idling my 2005 passat 2.0 diesel auto. When I turned the wheel at idle the belt would chirp and jump( at the pwr steering pump). Found out I had a defective Schrage(sp?) pulley/clutch on my Bosch 120 amp alternator.
Yeah I just bought a bosch too and it was too wide also I had to hacksaw a mm off to get it to fit in my bracket.
I would suggest the genuine Kia one, or a professional grade like NAPA's top line or an AC-Delco. I would avoid anything that says "USA Industries" or "Duralast" on it, based on personal experience. In our shop we have had nearly 100% failure rates with those brands.
Ok so I exchanged the alternator but just got it on this morning and the alternator i exchanged it with was a bosch which is a direct replacement of the original one i have, i hooked it all back up properly, new charge wire and its running at 11.4 volts now and still drops lol.
