Most of my experience is from the Infiniti side of the family, but I replaced an alternator on all my higher mileage vehicles. In general, the diode packs in Nissan alternators go out after about 150k miles or so.
If you don’t have huge power requirements and are happy with the standard amperage then just grab an NA Z32 alternator from a wrecker and modify the tensioner bolt to suit.
I ended up replacing the alternator but it wasn’t a genuine Nissan part and it didn’t work.
My car started experiencing the same issue as yours. Randomly lose power, no acceleration, give jump start, two days later, the same issue. Had to have it towed to Nissan. Yes, long story short, it does need a genuine OEM Alternator and OEM Battery! For some reason, the 3rd party parts are not as effective in the product. Once placed in my Nissan, it was commented there have been no issues.
My 2005 Altima used to eat alternators. The first and second replacement were rebuilds or aftermarket, I don't remember the order. I finally paid for an OEM and that one lasted until I sold the vehicle a few years later. This is one of those parts that is better to stick with OEM replacements.
Nissan offered me around the same price for my 370z alternator replacement. I went to eBay and bout a used oem alternator from a rear ended total z with 3k miles on it for 80 bucks and changed it myself
I replaced mine with a Nissan Quest alternator works pretty well and is cheaper with a higher current output there is a write up in the forums for it
So I go to get some iced coffee because Dunkin just came out with pumpkin and the car doesn't start. Sputters. So I call roadside assistance for a jump. They tell me it can't be jumped and it's probably my starter. Real kicker is I then call for a tow, tow guy shows up and jumps it???? So I HESITANTLY drive it to the dealer who determines it's a bad alternator.
I purchased a 2002 Nissan Quest alternator for my 2002 Xterra. It bolts right up. 120 amps instead of 80 amps.
I'm a little biased towards the Z32- Winter mode Summer wheels I love how it drives, feels and looks. ~80k miles since 2003 I've replaced the alternator a couple times, high pressure power steering hose, a couple injectors, the clutch twice and many tires.
