0w - 40 Mobile 1 was all I used for over 3 years, and the R was flawless until I sold her.
I use Mobil 1 0w-40 in my car (1.8T) because it is readily available, VW approved, has good performance and a decent price.
Mobile1 Full Syn 15w50 for my VR. I would like to think that if you changed your oil every 3000 miles under normal driving conditions than regular oil would be fine. Since I have some modifications and like to drive it like I stole it--sometimes-- than a better oil is good insurance.
I just did the chains + headgasket and a bunch of other misc stuff on my Corrado earlier this year. My guides were worn pretty bad and it only had 120k on the clock.
On that note, I currently have tried VW Oil from the dealer, Mobil 1, and Kendall Fully Synthetic and have determined that Mobil 1 5W-30 is the best mass-market oil out there to use. I run it 10,000 miles and the motor is as smooth as ever.
Yes, you can certainly use 506.01 in your TDI and it's used in many TDIs around the world. However, based upon some of the UOAs offered up, I'd suggest moving to 507.00. The 506.01 has shown relatively high wear metals.
I had consumption issues with Mobil-1 0W-40 in the W8, and Castrol/Valvoline 5W-40's showed signs of wear at higher mileage intervals when I ran a 10,000 OCI as recommended by VW.
Mobil 1 - thins out a bit and there was quite a bit of consumption when I used this oil for my first change
I always get Mobil 1 0w40 ... it's 502.00 and VW approved !
I rebuilt a 1.6TD, my first rebuild about 16 years ago, and it had Mobil 1 15w50 since day one. I sold the car with 550,000 miles on the engine and it was still purring.
