OEM BMW Engine oil

10w60 is the only oil you should put in these. If nothing else, you can usually find it at BMW automobile dealerships as that is what they put in the M3/4 series (or at least used to). Not cheap, but a lot less expensive than engine rebuilds.

Pros: less expensive than rebuilds
Cons: not cheap

OEM BMW Dash cam
chiefmackdaddypuff
  • Image quality:
Rating 5.0

BMWs now come with a prewired dashcam with built in collision detection. It’s a $500 unlock after you purchase the vehicle but well worth the money. Somebody backed into my car a few months ago and it came super handy in determining fault. Started recording as soon as it detected an impact.

Pros: handy in determining fault

OEM BMW Hood struts
kiznarsh
  • Ease of lifting:
  • Holds up securely:
  • Smooth motion:
Rating 4.5

After Christmas I addressed the pulleys and tensioners after closer inspection. The idler pulley was OK-ish but at this point...yeah. I accidentally bought an extra pulley...Removing & replacing the rest was pretty easy...The belts are in great shape so I'm not replacing those (I know, shocking). And of course it wouldn't be a kiznarsh project without replacing hood struts. So much better now you guys.

Pros: easy replacement, better now
Cons: chassis brace annoying

OEM BMW Brake discs

Use either BMWPartsDirect or GetBMWParts website, buy genuine BMW parts and find a good mechanic in your area (maybe even mobile mechanic who would come to you and replace rotors and pads). In LA I paid $180 for the labor to replace front rotors and pads on my X5, for example.

OEM BMW Expansion tank
JMUDoc
  • No leaks:
Rating 2.0

All the parts are present and correct, but the branding on the expansion tank and hoses gives me pause - these are system-critical components, and I wouldn't trust anything other than BMW originals.

Cons: untrustworthy expansion tank, untrustworthy hoses
